I’m Rupam Mishra, a passionate mithila painting artist with a deep connection to the rich cultural heritage of Mithila, the place where I belong. My journey into the world of art began at the tender age of 10, during a visit to my native village for a special ceremony. It was there that I witnessed the mesmerizing artistry of my cousin Kaaki, who was adorning the walls of our Kuldevi’s room with intricate designs using vibrant red Holi color. I was captivated by her skillful hands and the beauty she brought to those walls. From that moment, I fell in love with Madhubani painting.
As a Maithili, I have had the privilege of experiencing the colorful festivals, family gatherings, and age-old rituals of Mithila. I hail from the very place where Sita, a beloved figure in Hindu mythology, was born, and where Lord Ram, the incarnation of Vishnu, chose to marry. The cultural significance of Mithila runs deep in my veins.
My mission is to introduce and preserve the traditions and festivals that are gradually fading away with time. It pains me when my daughter asks about the significance of rituals like Sama Chakeva, which were once an integral part of our lives. Before marriage, I was a well-known mithila artist, but life’s responsibilities led me to focus on securing a bright future for the younger generation. Now, it’s time to rekindle my passion for Mithila art and share it with the world.
I’ve been fortunate to learn this beautiful art form from my grandmother and the skilled artisans in my village who possess intricate knowledge about every stroke and detail of Madhubani painting. Together, we embark on a journey to celebrate the rich tapestry of Mithila’s culture and heritage. Join me in preserving and reviving the essence of our traditions through the strokes of a brush, the colors of our hearts, and the stories we create on canvas. Let’s begin this artistic voyage together.
